On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, both towers of New York's World Trade Center and a large section of the Pentagon in Washington, DC were destroyed in coordinated attacks plotted by the al Qaeda terror network under the command of Osama bin Laden. Chronology: All time shown below are approximate Eastern Daylight Times. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 Another Day of Infamy • Map showing details of attacking flights (from CNN) 8:46 am - A hijacked jet aircraft crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. While early reports indicated the incident may have been accidental, subsequent events soon proved a coordinated terrorist attack was underway. The aircraft was later identified as American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 en route from Boston to Los Angeles. According to American Airlines, the plane carried 81 passengers (including 5 hijackers) and 11 crew members. 9:03 am - A second hijacked aircraft identified as United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. The plane carried 56 passengers (including 5 hijackers) and nine crew members. Both towers of the World Trade Center were now on fire. 9:45 am - A third hijacked aircraft, identified as American Airlines Flight 77 from Washington to Los Angeles, crashed into the Pentagon Building. Evacuation of the Pentagon began. The plane carried 58 passengers (including 5 hijackers) and six crew members. 9:45 am - The entire White House complex was evacuated "after receiving a creditable threat of terrorist attack on White House." was reported by Associated Press. 9:50 am - The Federal Aviation Agency ordered all U.S. airports closed and all non-departed flights cancelled. 10:00 am - The Capitol Building, Treasury Building and State Department in Washington were all evacuated. 10:05 am - The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. 10:15 am - A fourth hijacked commercial aircraft later identified as United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Pittsburgh. The flight had originated in Newark, New Jersey bound for San Francisco. The plane carried 38 passengers (including 4 hijackers) and seven crew members. Later investigations produced evidence that several of the passengers fought with the hijackers and forced the plane to crash before reaching its target. 10:28 am - The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. 10:55 am - Israel closed and evacuated all of its embassies worldwide. 12:00 Noon - All borders between the U.S. and Mexico were closed. 12:05 pm - Congressional Leaders expressed outrage at attack, promising that full forces of the United States would be utilized to identify and punish those responsible. 1:00 pm - President Bush, speaking from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, stated that all resources of the United States Government were being utilized to insure the safety of the American people. 1:25 pm - The FAA reported that all U.S. domestic flights in progress at the time of the attacks in New York and Washington had been accounted for and safely on the ground 2:50 pm - President Bush arrived at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, home of the Strategic Air Command. The president established a telephone link to key security adviser. 3:00 pm - The FAA announced that all U.S. airports would remain closed until at least noon on Sept. 12. 3:50 pm - The White House reported that while some federal buildings had been closed, the government remained in full operation. 5:15 pm - California Governor Gray Davis cleared the state's urban search and rescue teams for response to the World Trade Center if requested by New York officials. 5:30 pm - White House officials suggested the plane that crashed near Pittsburgh may have been headed to attack the White House, Camp David or the Capitol Building. 5:30 pm - Trade Center Building Seven, a 47-story structure making up part of the World Trade Center complex collapsed after being damaged by the fire and collapse of the twin towers. Other buildings near the World Trade Center continued to burn. 7:15 pm - Attorney General John Ashcroft, Secretary of HHS Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Transportation Norm Mineta, and FEMA Director Joseph Allbaugh held a press conference. The Web address is http://www.IFCCFBI.gov. ; 7:40 pm - Reports from the New York Police and Fire Departments indicated that at least 78 police officers were missing and as many as 200 firefighters had been killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. 9:30 pm - New York fire officials confirmed that at least 265 firefighters who had responded to the World Trade Center had been killed. 10:30 pm - Arlington, VA fire officials stated that up to 800 Pentagon employees were missing. 11:19 pm - CNN reported that FBI agents investigating the day's terrorist attacks were preparing to execute search warrants in multiple South Florida locations. 11:30 pm - New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani told the press that survivors may be trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center, where rescue efforts were underway. No survivors were ever found in the rubble of the World Trade Center. More than 2,900 people (excluding the terrorist hijackers) were confirmed to have died as a result of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
